- Godly Play: For children Kinder-1st grade (ages 4-6); Teachers lead our children in Godly Play, a wonderful child-centered curriculum designed to invite the children to learn stories and lessons from scripture in an engaging, hands-on way. This class takes place in our NEW Godly Play Room on the first floor of the Outreach Center.
- Godly Kids: For children in 2nd-4th grades (7-9 year-olds), we have a fun DVD-based curriculum called "What's In the Bible?" Using laugh-out-loud videos and engaging activities, children learn what the Bible is, how we got it, what it says, and what it means for them in their lives. This class is held in our Godly Kids room, Room 7 on the 1st floor of the Outreach Center.
- Godly Tweens: For 5th-6th graders (11-12 years old). Uses the "Connect" curriculum, a Bible-centered theme blended with humor and solid theology. This class meets in Room 13 on the second floor of the Outreach Center.
During the 9:00 and 11:15 AM services, all children are invited to participate in Children's Chapel, an age-appropriate worship service that takes place in Higgins Chapel. After the Epistle reading (the reading after the Psalm), the Priest will invite all children forward for a blessing before they are dismissed for Children's Chapel. (If you're new or your children are nervous, parents are welcome to accompany their children forward and go to Children's Chapel with them.) The children then follow the Children's Chapel Leader out of the church during the hymn before the Gospel reading. This allows parents and caregivers the chance to listen to the sermon while their children receive instruction at their own level. The Children's Chapel leaders will bring the children back to the church during the Peace, right before Communion.
Started in 2015, this joint ministry of St. Alban's, First Presbyterian Church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and Austin Ave. Methodist Church is for children in 4th through 6th grades. We meet quarterly, after church, for games, a service project, and a lesson. Location rotates among the three churches. Contact Jole for dates and information.
We have other wonderful events for children throughout the year: wreath-making in Advent, our St. Alban's Day picnic, our Easter Egg hunt, and more. These events are listed in our monthly newsletter, The Epistle, our weekly email, and our weekly "Getting Connected" section in our worship bulletins.
Our children's ministry is led by Jole Cromwell, Coordinator for Children's Ministry and Parish Life, along with a dedicated team of volunteers. If you have any questions about our children's ministry, please contact Jole.
Every member of our staff and vestry, and all staff and volunteers who work with youth and children, are certified by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas's Safeguarding God's Children program. This includes a background check and abuse prevention and awareness training.
Volunteer in Children's Ministry
At St. Alban's, Children's Ministry is a ministry we all share. It's the norm that parents of children in our ministry volunteer either in Children's Chapel or Sunday School. But lots of non-parents volunteer as well. Since Jesus put children at the center of his ministry, we believe that children's ministry is for the whole church. We invite you to join our team of dedicated volunteers. Roles include teaching Sunday School or serving as Doorkeeper (a second adult present to help the facilitator with crafts and activities). If you have been certified in Safeguarding God's Children, click below to sign up for a slot. Most of our volunteers serve one Sunday a month. If you'd like to sign up for the next Safeguarding God's Children certification, contact our Safe Church Administrator, Lori Youngblood.
