The O Antiphons (also known as the Great Advent Antiphons or Great Os) date to the sixth century and have become key musical features of the season of Advent. The texts are best known in the English-speaking world in their paraphrased form in the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”.
American composer Nico Muhly’s seven O Antiphon Preludes for organ will be performed by Eugene Lavery with tenor Micah Perry singing each O Antiphon chant beforehand. Each organ prelude is an exquisite inspiration from the original ancient melodies and texts of the chants.
